Palmižana Beach

Palmižana is the main island of the Pakleni archipelago — a chain of fourteen small, pine-forested islands stretching west from Hvar Town that together constitute one of the most pristine stretches of the central Dalmatian coast. A 10-minute water taxi ride from Hvar Town harbour transports you from one of Croatia's most fashionable tourist destinations to a world of protected coves, underwater marine reserves, and dense Mediterranean maquis where the only sounds are cicadas and the soft lapping of tide on pebble.

The main beach at Palmižana consists of several small pebble coves in a sheltered bay, with water clarity so exceptional that the underwater rock formations are visible from the surface at depths of 10 metres. The marine reserve status has allowed fish populations to recover to levels rarely seen elsewhere in the Adriatic: snorkelling here can yield sightings of large sea bream, comber wrasse, and occasional octopus tucked into rock crevices. Rental kayaks and paddle boards are available, and a circumnavigation of the island by kayak (roughly 2 hours) reveals completely secluded coves accessible only from the water.

The legendary Meneghello Restaurant — established in 1906 and still run by the same family — sits within a spectacular botanical garden of exotic Mediterranean plants. Dining here under pine trees draped with bougainvillea, on dishes that change daily according to what the family has caught or harvested, ranks among the finest seafood dining experiences in all of Croatia. Reservations are essential in July and August.

Getting there: Water taxis from Hvar Town harbour run continuously 9am–8pm in season (100–150 HRK per person). Last taxi back is typically around 10pm — check with your captain. Best time to visit: June and early July (before Croatian school holidays) for the most peaceful experience.
